How To Foil With A Cheap Laminator – Does The Type Of Foil Matter?

Supplies:

  1. Toner foil like deco foil and minc foil
  2. Laminator
  3. laser Computer paper
  4. Laser printer
  5. Double sided tape and/or glue
  6. Scissors
  7. Cardstock
  8. optional: Cricut machine that can do print then cut

Steps:

1.Turn on your laminator and let it warm up for about 20 min if it is a cheaper laminator. The light indicating it is ready may turn on before the 20 min, but I recommend to allow it to continue to warm up for best results.

2. Print the design you want to be foiled on a laser printer. It needs to be a laser printer, not a normal ink jet printer. The color of the ink will not matter. The foil will adhere anywhere there is laser printer ink. I used my Cricut machine’s print then cut feature, but it is not necessary. You can just print your design and cut it down to size by hand.

3. Place toner foil shiny side up on top of your printed design. Make sure to cover the entire design.

4. Sandwich the design and toner foil between computer paper. With cheaper laminators they do not get as hot as the more expensive laminators, so you need to use something thin like the computer paper to run your design through to insure as much heat can get to your design.

5. Run everything through laminator one time.

6. Peel back foil to revel foiled design.

7. Assemble card.

I really liked this foiling technique. It was relatively easy to make and the results were amazing. I liked that you did not even need a Cricut type machine to do this technique. So, it can be done relatively inexpensive. I now want to go out and buy more toner foil to foil more things! Please let me know if you would like me to test what other types of products we can do this foiling technique on.

I liked how this foiling technique fills in the design. I did not have to create a hatch fill to fill in the design like I did with the Cricut foil and Foil Quill. It was also a lot easier and more reliable in my opinion than these other foiling methods. It is a little more difficult to add multiple colors of foil using this technique however. I will still continue to use all 3 methods to foiling for different projects depending on the look I am going for.
