Supplies:

1. Modeling Paste
2. Canvas. Mine was a 12×12 inch canvas that came in a bundle pack from Michael’s.
3. Scrapper tools. These may be found in the cake decorations, tools, or paint section. You will need both smooth and at least one with grooves.
4. Paint in desired colors.
5. Paint brushes

Steps:

1. Apply Modeling paste evenly with the smooth cake scraper to the entire canvas. You can make it smooth or add a little texture to it depending on what you like. Do not apply it to thick, just a thin layer is all you need. The thicker it is the more likely it is to crack as it dries.

2. Drag a cake scraper with grooves through the modeling paste to create designs on your canvas. I recommend cleaning off your scraper tool each time before creating a new design on your canvas. Have fun playing around with different types of cake scraper tools. If you do not like a design you made, then use the smooth cake scraper to smooth that area out and try again.

3. Allow your piece to dry over night. I thought my piece felt dry after a few hours. When I started painting it, I found a few areas were not quite dry yet. So, be patent and wait over night to be sure.

4. Once your piece is fully dry have fun painting the fun designs/textures you created.

I was intimidated by working with modeling paste, but it actually was very easy to work with. This project is also very forgiving. It was easy to smooth it out and start again if you are not happy with how something turned out. You can keep it all white or add a little or a lot of color to it. I kept my piece simple, but you could cover the entire canvas in texture and designs. I am excited to work with modeling paste again. These piece look very expensive if you add a nice floating canvas frame around your piece.
