Supplies:
- At least 1 inch thick ribbon or fabric.
- Scissors or tool to cut fabric or ribbon.
- Foam heart. I found mine at Dollar Tree.
- Dowel rode or stick.
- Hot glue and glue gun.
- Flowers, greenery, or other items to finish decorating.
Steps:
1. Cut your fabric or ribbon down to squares. My ribbon was 2 ½ inches wide, so I made 2.5 by 2.5 inch squares. These do not have to be precise. The amount of squares you will need will depend on the size of your squares, the size of your heart, and how close you put the fabric pieces together. My ribbon was 20 feet, and one roll was not quite enough to cover one foam heart from Dollar Tree.
2. Use a stick or dowel rode to press the fabric squares into your heart. Make sure they are close enough together that you do not see any of the foam. Cover the entire heart. If an area gives you trouble, like the base of the heart, then you may want to try using some hot glue to hold the fabric in place. Be careful the hot glue can melt the Styrofoam. I also recommend using the stick to help hold and place the fabric in place till the glue dries so you do not burn your fingers.
3. Place extra decorations on heart as desired. I used hot glue to add a flower and a little extra greenery around it. You could also make a bow for your heart.
4. Insert your stick, you may need to cut it down, into the lower back of your heart. This will act as a stand for your heart.
The glitter ribbon I chose was from Michael’s Christmas section. It made a big mess with all of the glitter, but I think it turned out very pretty. Once my husband finally noticed it in front of our fire place he was shocked that I made it.
I decided to keep my heart very neutral and simple, but even just changing the color of the fabric or ribbon will make a big impact. It did hurt my hand a bit pushing in all of that fabric into the foam heart form, but if I decide to make another one I might try the purple fabrics. I think having different patterns and shades of the same color would also be fun.
