Supplies:
- Acrylic or glass to work on.
- Either puffy paint, gallery glass leaded, Pebeo paint outliner, or acrylic to create your outline.
- Resin dye (no actual resin is needed, just the dye to color)
- Gloss varnish.
- Cups to mix colors in.
- Tools to apply your color. I really like these silicon paint brushes.
- My design can be found in my shop. It contains lots of different stain glass designs that you can do this method with.
Steps:
- Make your base. I did not want to trace the outline design so I had my laser cutter cut it out of vinyl. I then used a little bit of resin to really secure the acrylic outline to my clear acrylic base. If you do not want to do it this way, then you can print the design out, then place the printed outline under your clear acrylic or glass and trace the design with puffy paint, gallery glass leaded, or Pebeo paint outliner. Let everything dry over night for all methods.
- Make sure to remove the protective film from all acrylic pieces. I recommend leaving the protective layer on the back only of the clear acrylic base. This will help protect it till you are finished.
2. Apply a few drops of your desired resin dye color to some gloss varnish. Make sure to mix it well. Apply additional drops of the resin dye till desired color is reached. Remember the gloss varnish is a little milky/cloudy, but will dry clear. So, your color will be a little different when everything is dry.
3. Apply the colored gloss varnish to your design. Continue mixing colors and filling in your design till it is complete. Then let it dry over night.
4. If you see any areas that need more color, then mix your resin dye to the gloss varnish and fill in any areas that may need it. Let it sit overnight to fully dry.
5. Remove the protective film from the back of your piece. Hold it up against a window to admire it’s beauty.
I really like how this piece turned out. It was very easy to apply. It is also more transparent and stain glass like than the gallery glass in my opinion. I will definitely use this method again on other projects.
