Supplies:
- Air dry clay. I used Sculpey.
- Rolling pin or something similar.
- 2 paint stir sticks or something similar to help you roll out your clay evenly.
- jewelry eye pins and needle nose pliers if turning it into an ornament
- Exacto knife or something to cut your clay.
- Black paint and a paint brush for the eyes and tail.
- Mod Podge or other something to seal your piece.
- Cup with a little water.
- A lid or something round.
- Something to help shape your cat ghosts.
Steps:
1. Roll out your air dry clay so it is flat and even. It needs to be as wide as your round item.
2. Place your round item over your clay and use the exacto knife to cut out your clay around the round item. Remove the extra clay.
3. Drape your round clay over an object and with your hands press it around the object and create pleats with your hands and shape your ghost. A cat shape is ideal, but you can always add features like ears and tail after you have your basic body shape. I made a walking cat and a sitting cat shape. If you need to add extra pieces like a tail, then make the tail first. Then score/scratch both the area of your cat that your will be adding the tail as well as any section of the tail that will be touching your cat. Add a little bit of water with your finger to these areas you scratched. These helps create a better bond between the two pieces of clay being joined together. Now add your tail to your cat. You can also use your fingers to help blend the tail to the cat and smooth out the joining area or areas. If there are any scratches, fingerprints, or other rough areas on your cat, then you can dip your finger in some water and rub over those areas to smooth them out.
4. Once you have your cat shape I recommend removing the object you used to help shape the cat ghost so it does not get stuck when your clay drys. Then sit your cat ghost aside and allow it to fully dry. I like to wait over night.
5. You can now paint on a face or paint the cat’s tail or even ears if you would like. I left one of my cats all white to be more ghost like. The other cat I just painted his tail so it looked like the cat was hiding under a curtain. I also painted little toe beans on the one cat. Who doesn’t love those little toe beans. They make everything even more cute.
6. Once the paint is dry I recommend sealing your ghosts to help protect them. In the past I used Polyacrylic to seal an air dry clay ghost and he has held up for a few years now. This time I tried sealing these cat ghosts with a glossy mod podge, which should work well. Do not forget to seal all areas including the bottom/inside of your ghosts.
These cat ghosts turned out so cute! I really like the cat sitting up like it is trying to scare someone. I think adding the little toe beans to the paws really adds to it’s cuteness. I might add a little hat to the other cat to match his ghost buddy. You could also make other ghost animals. I also added flowers and glitter to ghosts, which you could also add to these ghost cats. I just chose to keep mine simple and let their cuteness shine.
