Supplies:
- Decorative mesh. I used 2 rolls of yellow and 1 roll of green. I purchased mine from JoAnn Fabrics. You could also use burlap.
- Wreath form. I used the larger wreath form from Dollar Tree.
- Hot glue and glue gun.
- Zip ties. I recommend clear in color.
- Something to clip the extra ends off of the zip ties.
- Scissors and a rotary cutter or burning tool to cut the mesh material.
- Ribbon or something to hang wreath from.
- Brown felt. I used 2 sheets of brown felt, but you could even do a third sheet of felt if you want a larger center.
- Optional: clips to help hold pieces. The ones I used were from Dollar Tree
Steps:
1. Cut decorative mesh into 10 by 10 inch squares. My decorative mesh was already 10 inches wide. You can use a rotary cutter or a burning tool to help the ends from fraying.
2. Place zip ties on wreath frame. See photo for how I placed my zip ties, but feel free to make changes. I partially closed the zip ties so it was easier when I had a petal finished to place it and zip tie it down.
3. Fold a decorative mesh square in half, then bunch it at the bottom to form a petal. You can use clips to help hold the tip together as you bunch the bottom. You can also use the clip to hold the bunched bottom as you place it in the zip tie.
4. Place the petal in a zip tie allowing about ½ an inch to hang over to help hold it in place by the zip tie.
5. Continue to place petals until you have completed and are satisfied with this part of your wreath.
6. Make green leaves in the same way as you did for the petals. I placed two leaves in one zip tie allowing them to over lap a little. Place as many of few leaves around the outer most layer of your wreath frame.
7. For the center of the flower fold your brown felt into thirds and cut along the folded lines. Do this for all sheets of brown felt that you have. If you use larger pieces of felt, then I cut strips of felt about 3 inches wide.
8. Take each 3 inch wide strip of brown felt and fold it in half long ways. Apply hot glue to the very bottom where the edges of the folded felt comes together.
9. With a pair of scissors make slits all down the folded edge of each felt strip. Make sure not to cut through the glued area. I made my slits about ½ inch long.
10. Roll one of the pieces of brown felt applying hot glue along the bottom to help hold it together.
11. Add additional felt strips to your rolled felt as you go.
12. Apply hot glue to the back of your flower center and place it in the center of your flower. When I made mine, I attached a pipe cleaner to the back of my flower center with hot glue. I then fed the pipe cleaner through the holes in my wreath form to attach it. The pipe cleaner was an extra step that was not needed, but you could also do this if you want to.
This wreath does take a bit of time to make, but it was a pretty big wreath. You could make it in different colors as well. I made the sunflower for fall and I thought the yellow would be very pretty against my blue door. If you like this piece let me know and I may make a Christmas poinsettia.
